There are so many tempting treats at tailgates and I want to provide you with some healthy tips to avoiding weight gain throughout this football season.
Whether you are hosting the tailgate or just joining with family or friends, you'll be prepared to navigate the tailgate, the healthier way. Here are some of my healthy tailgating tips:
Throughout the week, cut back on a few extra calories to save some for splurging over the weekend. 100/day is more than enough.
That'll give you 500 or 600 by game day that you can feel less guilty about consuming.
2. MUSTARD OVER KETCHUP:
This is pretty self-explanatory but ketchup has more sugar and calories than mustard.
Keep it simple and just choose mustard.
3. NO BUNS, HUN:
White hamburger/hotdog buns are simple carbs.
Simple carbs= unnecessary extra calories & unnecessary extra calories= stored fat.
If there's an option for a wheat bun then pick that instead!
Otherwise pass on the bread, you really don't need it.... unless you've had too many beers.
4. SKIP THE CHEESE AND CHEESY DIPS:
Cheese is high in saturated fat.
And most cheese servings amount to 100 calories which can add up prettttttay quick.
You're best bet is to skip the cheese on your hamburger and if there are cheesy dips limit yourself to a serving size (2 tablespoons) if you are going to indulge.
5. PASS ON THE PRE MIXED DRINKS:
Jungle juice, punch, margaritas.... all of those mixed drinks are LOADED with sugar.
If you are going to drink, stick to a light beer or bring your own drinks and drink mixes.
LOW-CAL MARGARITA:
Organic repasado tequila
Fresh squeezed orange juice to taste
Fresh squeezed lime juice to taste
Club Soda
optional: Agave nectar to taste
By skipping these common ingredients you're saving a ton of extra calories and sugar:
Sub pre mix margarita for lime juice to get the same great taste.
Sub the triple sec with fresh squeezed oranges.
Sub juice or lime soda with carbonated water.
6. OFFER TO BRING SOMETHING:
A healthy something, of course.
This is the best way to avoid the unwanted calories!
Bring a healthy snack like veggies or fruit and dip.
Hummus and carrots/celery.
Whole grain tortillas and salsa.
All of these options are much healthier than cookies and that buffalo chicken dip.
A few other tips:
1. Eat a snack filled with protein and fiber before heading out to a tailgate.
This will fill you up and prevent less snacking
2. Go for fruits, veggies and lean meats as much as possible
3. Mix alcohol with carbonated water instead of juices
4. Don't hang around the food table- bring a football to throw with friends to stay moving!
5. A serving of alcohol is 100 calories or more, so watch how much you are drinking
6. Drink lots of water
7. If you're worried there won't be any semi-healthy snacks at the tailgate,
bring a bar or something healthy for yourself
Enjoying the tailgates and football games doesn't have to be unhealthy! There are easy ways to make SMARTER choices at a tailgate to avoid adding inches to your waistline.
Think about what you are eating and follow these simple rules for navigating the tailgate-
