I have the absolute BEST strawberry banana smoothie recipe that I think tastes better than any smoothie you'd get elsewhere. Its creamy and thick like a shake, is delicious and you can make it at home, with just three healthy ingredients! One of the best parts- it's under 250 calories and even has 9 grams of protein (without having to add any protein powder!) Not to mention it has far less sugar than a smoothie you'd get from Starbucks (41 grams of sugar), Jamba Juice (56 grams of sugar) or McDonalds's (44 grams of sugar). This is because a good smoothie doesn't need a sugary syrup or fruit juice to make it taste good.. just the fruit and some milk will make this PERFECT smoothie. But the secret to making this smoothie thick and creamy is what I do before I make it. Freeze your bananas and strawberries!! Using frozen fruit means you don't need any ice or to add other frozen treats like frozen yogurt to make it thick. And since you don't have to add ice cream, sorbet or frozen yogurt.. no unnecessary added sugar. SWEET.
This is the recipe that I have used for years. Feel free to mix it up however you like, I think keeping it simple with frozen fruit and milk is the best way to make a smoothie. And probably the healthiest.
THE BEST STRAWBERRY BANANA SMOOTHIE:
1 FROZEN ripe banana (I usually use a medium banana)
5-6 FROZEN whole strawberries
1 cup or less of Westsoy Organic Plus Vanilla Soymilk (Might be able to try to unsweetened version too!)
I know not everyone likes soy milk- so swap the soy with your favorite milk! I think the vanilla flavoring adds to the yummy-ness so if the milk you choose doesn't have vanilla try adding a drop of organic vanilla extract.
I have tried this recipe with almond milk and coconut milk but the soy milk, for some reason, always comes out the best. It's sweet, creamy and has the best strawberry banana flavor without the added coconut or almond flavor. My boyfriend hates when I try to sneak in soy milk or any kind of milk other than his milk into a recipe but he even admits that this smoothie is good. And another plus- the protein content. It beats out all other milk in protein content which makes this a much more balanced smoothie recipe.
So if you're craving a strawberry banana smoothie, you don't need to pick one up at a fast food restaurant (with all the added junk).. freeze some strawberries and bananas and you've got you're perfect, HEALTHIER smoothie at home!
. Be happy and healthy,
